UN Higher Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay, has expressed her satisfaction about the UAE efforts to boost the human rights in general and the labour rights in particular.

She stressed that she has seen positive progress in a record time for the UAE, which is a young country compared to other world countries.

The international official told Emirates News Agency (WAM) that the aim of her visit is to assess the human rights situation in the UAE and open direct channels with competent authorities, as well as explore opportunities of joint cooperation in relevant issues to activate the role of commission.

She expressed her pleasure while touring Al Rah labour accommodation in Mussafah on the initial results about her visit to the UAE, compared to her first visit to the UAE in 1970s in the last century.

Pillay said she held positive talks with the UAE officials, valuing their observations and openness with the commission to work jointly not only to enhance the human rights situation in the country, but also to improve it at the regional level.

Accompanied by HE Humaid bin Dimas, Acting Director General of the Ministry of Labour and other senior officials, Pillay was briefed about the services provided to the labour. She expressed her admiration about the labour accommodation which she described to be at the level of four star hotels in some countries, stressing that the employers should incur expenses of the services.

She added the labour accommodation in the UAE meets the international standards, noting that some of the services being rendered here exceed these standards.
